Drug abuse usually happens when a person takes a drug for reasons that are non-medical or non-therapeutic. More often than not, the normal use of these drugs are for performance enhancement, or they are used to alter brain function. Both of these types of drugs, despite having some form of negative connotation attached to their use, actually have some benefits to offer when used accordingly – which is why they are often prescribed. That being said, drug abuse normally happens when a person decides to take said drugs long after they are needed, or take them in amounts that are harmful and are beyond the prescription limit.
The concept of drug abuse is related to the concept of substance abuse disorder, in which a person’s behavior and psyche are altered by the abuse of certain drugs and the subsequent addiction. It must be noted that the main difference between the two concepts is that the concept of drug abuse refers to the act of actually abusing the drugs whereas substance abuse is almost always referring to the acts that are caused by the abuse of drugs or drug addiction. Currently, millions of people are engaged in drug abuse.
